Across Somalia, 7.1 million people (close to 50 per cent of the population) now face famine, and an estimated 1.5 million children under the age of five faces acute malnutrition, including 386,400 who are likely to be severely malnourished. (UN)
Four consecutive failed rainy seasons and severe climate-crisis-induced drought are causing the dire situation. Combined with regional conflict, the prolonged impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. And soaring food prices tied to the war in Ukraine have resulted in a 160 per cent increase in people facing catastrophic levels of food insecurity, starvation and disease in Somalia, and the risk of famine looms more significant than ever.
